Virginia Tech Ready To Generate Some Offense In 2009
One team that is on the fast track to becoming a successful NCAA football program is the Hokies from Virginia Tech. While the team had a winning season last year they were only able to do so with several wins that were very close calls. Not known for blowing out the other team and using more defense and special teams to produce wins many feel that the Hokies are ready to finally make some noise in the ACC with some higher scoring games.
Over the summer the receiving corps for Virginia Tech elected to stay on campus and run routes, lift weights and study game film in an attempt to be a sharper more focused offense along with quarterback Tyrod Taylor. Taylor spent extra time along with fellow quarterback Sean Glennon working on passing drills in an attempt to change the statistics from last year where they had more interceptions thrown than touchdown passes. Of course the passing game will be essential this year since the Hokies will not have Darren Evans in a Virginia Tech helmet this year due to injury and his replacement, Ryan Williams, has yet to have a carry in his collegiate career.
For their efforts both last year and in the off season Virginia Tech has earned a number six pre-season ranking and many felt the team could have actually gone higher in the standings. While the offense has put in lots of extra credit work for the game over the summer it is still the defense that will carry the team. These hard hitting guys led by defensive end Jason Worilds should continue to dominate the line making it tough on opposing offenses to get anything going. This will keep the score low on that end making it so that offense does not have to frequent the end zone often to rake up wins, but then it will be nice if they do anyway.
